If you’re serious about weight loss, you want it to last. Fad diets aren’t cutting it, and the amount of weight lost might be remarkable with some of them, but they aren’t permanent, and soon, you wind up gaining back every pound you lost, plus a few more for good measure. It’s no fun, can be extremely frustrating, and may even make you want to give up entirely.
But there are ways to take off those pounds and keep them off – and no fad diets are required.
Certainly, there are (perhaps literally) thousands of diets and exercise programs out there that guarantee permanent weight loss, but few of them are legitimate. One thing that all experts agree on, however, when it comes to making the loss of weight last, is that consistent exercise is necessary.
If someone were to tell you that their exercise program is the “only” way to lose weight, then you should probably run away (or at least fast walk). The truth is, consistent exercise of any sort will help you with your weight reduction goals. You have to listen to your body, decide what’s fun for you, and then stick with it. Here are three ways to keep up consistent exercising for losing weight:
- Give yourself variety. If you like to run, dance, swim, walk, do yoga, Pilates, or play a sport, then pick two or three of them and mix it up. Just because you’re exercising consistently doesn’t mean you have to be devoid of diversity in your workouts. Also, stop calling it a work out – make it play time or fun time.
- Have fun. Yes, change your mind about exercise, and turn it into being something you do that’s a treat for yourself, rather than a burden or a responsibility. Be a kid again – do yoga and stand on your head if you want to, or dance around for a half hour and just let go. Turn it into play time, and you won’t regret it – you may even find yourself looking forward to it every day!
- Forget your goals. When you’re exercising, don’t focus so hard on weight loss goals. That will only turn exercise into something that must be done rather than something you enjoy. Enjoyment is key to keeping exercise consistent.
If you choose what’s fun for you, you’re more likely to stay with it, even on “bad days” where you don’t feel like doing much of anything. Fun is important, and there are plenty of creative aerobic and strength training exercises out there that even the biggest couch potato can enjoy doing.
Don’t get hung up about aerobic versus strength exercises, either. Both are good for you, and strength training will help you get much more out of your aerobic workouts, too.
